Community Mental Health in the Bronx: The Work of Dr. Michael Civin

Local access to psychological care shapes outcomes as much as clinical technique does, and that conviction runs through the career of Dr. Michael Civin. When he co-founded Rose Hill Psychological Services in the Bronx in 2008, the goal was to bring credible, research-based mental health support directly to a borough that had long been underserved. As senior psychologist, he continues to guide how that mission is carried out.
Serving Varied Populations
The needs arriving at a community practice are rarely uniform, and his skill set was built for that reality. Psychodiagnostic assessment helps clarify what is actually happening for a client. Group therapy creates shared space for people facing similar pressures. Dedicated adolescent care addresses a stage of life that often goes unattended until problems escalate. He also supervises other practitioners, extending his reach well past his own caseload.
Reaching Beyond One Neighborhood
Since 2007, Dr. Michael Civin has also maintained a private practice covering Manhattan, Astoria, and Bayville. Across nearly thirty years he has become a recognizable figure within New York City’s psychological community, known as a veteran practitioner rather than a newcomer.
Education Supporting Service
Community work of this kind rests on formal preparation. He earned his A.B. from Harvard College, a first master’s degree from the University of Oregon, and a second master’s from Adelphi University, followed by a PhD from Adelphi’s Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies and a postdoctoral certificate in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in 1993.
Knowledge Given Back
Service extends to the field itself. Teaching appointments as a full professor, associate professor, and faculty member have let him prepare future clinicians, while his journal articles and book chapters circulate what he has learned to a wider professional audience.
Taken together, the clinical, academic, and published strands of his career point in one direction: psychology practiced as a public good rather than a private specialty.
